MTNL: A drain on the country

I started fuming at the title of this news item on Rediff in spite of the fact that I am nowhere close to owning an MTNL connection. Little did I realize what was in store. The Minister of State for IT and Telecom, Shakeel Ahmad, told the Rajya Sabha how much of a drain MTNL was on the exchequer.

MTNL's total outstanding from subscribers stands at Rs 1,509.01 crore (Rs 15.09 billion) as on October 31, 2005.
That, dear friends, is just over .01% of India's estimated GDP. So this one PSU has such a significant impact on the Indian economy.

As Nana Patekar famously said, Ek machchar aadmi ko hijda bana deta hai!
