MTNL: A drain on the countryI started fuming at the title of this news item on Rediff in spite of the fact that I am nowhere close to owning an MTNL connection. Little did I realize what was in store. The Minister of State for IT and Telecom, Shakeel Ahmad, told the Rajya Sabha how much of a drain MTNL was on the exchequer. MTNL's total outstanding from subscribers stands at Rs 1,509.01 crore (Rs 15.09 billion) as on October 31, 2005.That, dear friends, is just over .01% of India's estimated GDP. So this one PSU has such a significant impact on the Indian economy. As Nana Patekar famously said, Ek machchar aadmi ko hijda bana deta hai!
