Bihar: From known devil to unknown whatever

As the results from the Bihar assembly election started trickling in early this morning on television, it became apparent that the JD(U)-BJP combine led by Nitish Kumar had won the election, bringing to an end nearly fifteen continuous years of [mis]rule by Laloo Prasad Yadav Lalu Yadav and his wife Rabri Devi. The JD(U)-BJP combine secured 146 out of the 243 seats while the RJD and its allies, including the Congress(I) got only 65 seats. Ram Vilas Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party won a paltry 14 seats.

After one and a half decades of misrule, corruption, backwardness, absence of development etc., it is but natural that we hope Bihar will improve under the new government. The problem though is that Nitish Kumar is as unproven a commodity as Lalu and Rabri are proven ones. For the people of Bihar, it could just be a jump from the frying pan to the fire.

Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi could be in trouble though, if the new government pursues the various cases pending against them to their logical conclusion. In addition, his clout within the central government is sure to have reduced significantly given that he couldn't win in his own state. Could we perhaps at last see him exit as Railway Minister, a reaction something dozens of train accidents failed to trigger?

    Long live the democracy!
