A significant discovery could have been made by the Mars Express craft when its sensors reported ammonia gas in the spectral signature of the Martian atmosphere. The presence of ammonia (NH3) is interesting because the gas is only present for a short duration in the atmosphere, which means it must be getting replenished either due to volcanic activity or microbes.
