Saddam Hussein was unrepentant when he appeared in front of the special tribunal setup to try him and members of his regime for atrocities commited. There is a long list of charges against him and his Baath party regime.

The NY Times Op/Ed feels that the trial should not begin until a proper elected Iraqi govt is formed. Legal questions will be asked however on the legitimacy of the courts setup by the US authorities.

Given that several other dictators have been tried in courts, will Saddam get away scot-free like Idi Amin? Will he be put to death by his own countrymen as Nicolai Ceausescu was? Will the whole case be a long drawn out affair like it has been in the case of Yugoslavia's Slobodan Milosevic?

There could be an argument that since the US supported Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, they must also face identical charges which Saddam would face related to that war.
