    Confused commies?

The news that STD rates will be slashed majorly means [obviously] that phone bills decrease. Note to Gaurav, this is STD, as in the phone kind, not the sexually transmitted diseases kind!

To me, it seems like a good thing. But I predict opposition from the loony Left possibly on the grounds that this would directly impact the livelihood of so many poor people in cities and villages who own/operate/work in the PCOs (Public Call Offices). In addition, this would mean lower revenues for the two PSUs, BSNL and MTNL.

The fact that lower call charges means poor people have to shell out less money will obviously escape their intelligence. Protesting, just because they have to stay in the limelight, is a feature of their functioning anyway.

Market forces are almost definitely at play. Last week, Reliance Infocomm announced that it's pre-paid mobile service customers could call any phone in India for Re. 1 per minute.
