PoliticsLaloo Prasad Yadav is apparently leading a bunch (or herd, given his closeness to ungulates ? *hehe*) of MPs to the World Cup to cheer India on. I've mailed the finance ministry asking if my tax money was being used for this purpose. I hope I get a reply. There is some blatant bribery and threats going on regarding the UN Security Council's position on Iraq. The US has threatened Russia with pulling off all aid and joint space/missile programmes. They have also removed the sanctions imposed on Pakistan following Musharraf's 1999 coup. Apparently this is to facilitate the transition to democratic rule in Pakistan and is important to US efforts to respond to, deter or prevent acts of international terrorism. Apparently the US administration, in its infinite wisdom, has totally forgotten that there were indeed (s)elections in Pakistan last year. Then again, maybe Bush's idea of democracy and elections is different, given the way he became President in the first place!! It is obvious that this lifting of sanctions is nothing but a bribe. I'm amazed that acts like these dont find mention when corruption indices are created by the UN or other agencies. CricketSo Fleming's nose has been rubbed into the ground. It is interesting how in this World Cup, bravado statements made before games are totally demolished during the game. Caddick, Akhtar, Fleming, Sehwag come readily to mind. There maybe a few I've forgotten. Please feel free to remind me of others. Also notice the number of catches that qualify for the "You've just dropped the Cup, mate!" award. Boucher (Fleming), Razzaq (Tendulkar), Marillier and 2 other Zimbabweans (Cairns) and McCullum (Dravid). Must be a pretty heavy cup (or cross?) to bear. If Sri Lanka win today and knock New Zealand out, it really is poetic justice. Kenya in the semis while Kiwis eat humble pie. Labels: 2003 world cup
