Network effect in nature?

I read this interesting piece in 'The Guardian' last week where a variety of lark was reported as gradually losing its singing range because of falling numbers of the species.

I wonder if this is the inverse of the Network Effect at work in nature. As the number of larks dwindles, the remaining larks have fewer number of fellow-larks to communicate with. Hence, the 'value' of the song diminishes with a reduction in the number of people in the 'network'.

Eventually perhaps evolution will take over and the lark will lose its voice altogether!

You are right. It's a classical information network. Languages, birdsongs, computer programmes all die out when the network dwindles. Eflactem's Law, if you will.

Assuming, larks don't mutate, that is!

Those larks that can sing 'better' will be able to communicate and hence survive better than those that don't. As a result, more efficient communicators, if possible, will benefit from their own abilities in making more copies of themselves.
