    What the tsunami affected really need

    A social activist tells us what type of help is really needed. No dumping of clothes and medicine please. Solid waste management, temporary housing and counselling are the top of the tree currently. You can also find a list of things required from the AID website. A more detailed list of what they really need [re-posted after appropriate editing and after obtaining permission] from an internal mailing list in our organization.

    Gum boots
    Thick gloves
    Shovels, Pick axes and Shoes (for volunteers clearing up debris)
    Medical equipment - BP apparatus, stethoscopes etc.
    Small FM radios for volunteers to hear local and emergency news
    Cameras for documenting local work
    Cell phones with chargers
    Water packets
    (NEW) Blankets and mats
    Soaps, detergents, toothpaste, toothpowder, brush, bleaching powder
    Torches, batteries, lamps (preferably solar)
    Dry rations - rice, wheat, dal, cooking oil, sambar powder, tamarind
    Milk powder for children
    Stoves and vessels for cooking, plates, tumblers etc.
    (NEW) Towels
    (NEW) Clothes - in-skirts for women, sarees, dhotis, lungis, blouses, undergarments, children's clothes, sanitary pads
    Feeding bottles
    Plastic buckets & pots
