China is fast emerging as a new research powerhouse. The expenditure on applied research in China has increased from $5 billion in 1996 to over $20 billion currently. Microsoft and other companies should however not be surprised if research papers or patent documents for say web search techniques are suddenly found in Quetta, Pakistan. Its part of the historical natural trade between the two countries.
