The Manmohan Singh government got into another crisis late yesterday night after it was known that an Iraqi terrorist group had captured 3 Indians among 6 hostages it had taken in Iraq. The group, which calls itself "The Holders of the Black Banners", threatened to behead a hostage every 72 hours unless the governments pulled off forces from Iraq and the companies closed their Iraq branches. The government though seems to have been totally unprepared for such a situation. Its first response was an extremely defensive one, almost cajoling the terrorists that they shouldnt harm the Indians because India hasnt sent troops to Iraq, and never will.

This was the wrong position to take, an extremely meek one where you're pleading with the terrorists not to harm them. What the government should do is to make it clear to the terrorists that any loss of Indian lives will be severely dealt with. There should not and cannot be a sequel to Kandahar airport, circa 1999.
