The 2001 census indicates that India's population is now beyond 102.8 crores with a sex ratio of 933 females for every 1000 males and a growth of 1.94% per annum. UP, Maharashtra, Bihar and Bengal head the list of most populous states. From whatever data I could search on the census site, I figured out that the sex ratio has improved marginally, from 926 in 1991 to 933 now. However we're obviously miles away from where we should be. I'm hardly surprised about the abysmal ratio though. As long as any attempt to invoke God also saddles him with the responsibility of ensuring that you have a son rather than a daughter, the problem is bound to exist.
