England's woes at penalty shootouts at major tournaments continued after hosts Portugal reached the semis with a 6-5 win through a penalty shootout yesterday. England's past history reads thus:

World Cup 1990: West Germany win semi-final on penalties
Euro 96: West Germany win semi-final on penalties at Wembley
World Cup 1998: Argentina win pre-quarter final on penalties at France
Euro 2004: Portugal win quarter-final at home

Add in Beckham's missed penalty in England's opener against France and you have a fair idea of one of the things which ails England. Typical of England, the players were
complaining about the penalty spot area.

It'd be really great now if Tim Henman got knocked out before this weekend at Wimbledon and England fail to make the finals of the NatWest Series as well.
