As Nitin wrote in the Acorn nearly 3 weeks ago, Musharraf has got rid of Jamali. Maybe he's just trying to draw parity with India, pointing out that even India has a government headed by someone who wasnt the first choice PM. The difference though is that while India's democracy is believable, Pakistani democracy is an oxymoron.

I think the Indian elections had a spill over effect in Pakistan. The Pakistani people noted how the Indian poor could get the government to take notice of their plight and compared it with their own lot. Hence Shaukat Aziz's pro-poor Budget.

But this change seems to have been planned a long time ago. Foisting Aziz two years ago would have been too controversial, even for Pakistan. They used a seat warmer for a while, united the various factions of the Muslim League before putting Musharraf's first choice as PM.
